4-7-8 breathing for sleep means breathing in for four, holding for seven, and breathing out slowly for eight, four times. The long hold and the very long exhale slow the heart and quieten the "get ready" side of the nervous system, which is why many people drift off during the third or fourth round. It takes about a minute, it costs nothing, and it works better with practice, so the night it does not work is still worth doing.

Why the exhale is the part that matters

Your heart rate rises a little as you breathe in and falls as you breathe out. Make the out-breath twice as long as the in-breath and you spend most of each cycle in the slowing phase. The seven-count hold adds something else: with a full chest and nothing to do, racing thoughts have nowhere to go, and the body reads the stillness as safety. After a few rounds the yawn usually arrives on its own.

How to do it in bed

  1. Lie on your back or your side, lights off, phone face down.
  2. Breathe out completely through the mouth, with a soft whoosh.
  3. Close the mouth. Breathe in through the nose for a count of four.
  4. Hold for seven. Relax the shoulders during the hold.
  5. Breathe out through the mouth for eight, slowly, with the same soft sound.
  6. That is one round. Do four. If you are still awake, rest for a minute and do four more.

The counts are proportions, not seconds. If seven is too long to hold comfortably, count faster; keep the 4:7:8 ratio and the rhythm still works.

If it does not work for you

  • You get lightheaded. Count faster or do fewer rounds. Never force a hold.
  • Your mind keeps running. Add a job for it: count each exhale from eight down to one, or let Bliss count instead of you.
  • Nothing happens. The first week often feels like that. Do it every night at the same point in your wind-down routine and judge it after seven nights, not one.
  • You wake at 3 am. Four rounds of 4-7-8 are a good first move; our post on what to do when you wake at 3 am covers the rest.

Doing it with Bliss

Ask Bliss for "4-7-8" in CalmSpace.ai and she counts the whole thing in her voice, slowly, with the lights off and your eyes closed. If you prefer, choose the Sleep rhythm in Breathe together and do it with someone far away at the same moment. The sleep stories and sound mixes in the sleep library pick up where the breath leaves off, with a timer that fades so nothing wakes you later.

Questions people ask

How many rounds of 4-7-8 should I do to fall asleep?

Four rounds, then rest. If you are still awake after a minute or two, four more. Most people do not need a third set.

Should I do 4-7-8 breathing through my nose or mouth?

In through the nose, out through the mouth with a soft sound. If your nose is blocked, breathe in through the mouth as well; the ratio matters more than the route.

Can 4-7-8 breathing be done sitting up?

Yes. It is a good wind-down at your desk or on the sofa before bed. In bed, lying down, it is more likely to tip you into sleep.

Is 4-7-8 breathing safe to do every night?

For most people, yes; it is slow breathing with a pause. If holding your breath is uncomfortable because of a health condition, shorten the holds or check with your doctor. CalmSpace.ai is a wellness app, not medical advice.
