Transcendental meditation, usually written TM, is a mantra meditation taught by one organisation, learned in person from a certified teacher over a short paid course, and practised for about twenty minutes twice a day with the eyes closed. That sentence contains everything that makes it different from the meditation in most apps: a mantra rather than the breath, a teacher rather than a recording, a fee before the first session, and a fixed dose. This post explains each of those plainly, says what the course costs and what is claimed for it, and ends with a free way to start meditating today if the course is not within reach. CalmSpace.ai does not teach TM, so this is written from the outside, with that said up front.

What is transcendental meditation?

TM comes from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who began teaching it in the late 1950s, and the technique and its name are held by the organisation he founded. You learn it from a certified TM teacher, in person, in a course of a few sessions over consecutive days. The teacher gives you a mantra, a sound without a meaning, chosen for you and not shared. You sit comfortably, close your eyes, and repeat the mantra silently for about twenty minutes, in the morning and again in the afternoon or early evening.

Its teachers describe the technique as effortless. You do not concentrate on the mantra, push thoughts away or try to feel anything. You let the mantra repeat, thoughts come and go, and when you notice you have drifted you return, easily, to the mantra. The organisation's own word for what happens is "transcending": the mind settling to a quieter level of its own activity. Whether that is a different state or a familiar one described in new words is a question for the person sitting in the chair.

What does the TM course cost?

The course is a one-off fee, paid before you learn, and the organisation sets it by country. In the United States it is published on the official TM site on a sliding scale by household income; at the time of writing the scale runs from a few hundred dollars to around a thousand, with reduced rates for students and some others. Other countries have their own fees, and the only reliable figure is the one on the official site for where you live. The fee covers the course sessions and, the organisation says, follow-up sessions and access to teachers afterwards.

That fee is the main reason people search for alternatives, and it is worth being clear about what it buys: a teacher in the room, a tradition, and a technique you cannot learn as taught any other way. Those are real things. They are also not required to meditate.

What does TM ask of you?

Twenty minutes, twice a day, every day. The organisation is firm that the practice is the full dose, not a few minutes when you remember. Some people find a fixed routine the easiest thing in the world to keep and would not swap it; others find twice a day impossible around work, children or shifts and give up in the second week. Know which you are before you pay. If you are not sure, the free way to start at the end of this post is a fair test: if you cannot find ten minutes a day for a guided session for a month, forty minutes a day of silent sitting is unlikely to stick either.

What is claimed for transcendental meditation?

The TM organisation publishes its own list of research and claims on its own site, and some studies of TM have been published in medical journals. We do not evaluate those claims here. The plain, cautious summary that applies to meditation in general is this: a few minutes of settled attention, repeated most days, tends to leave people calmer and a little more able to notice their own thinking, and that is true of mantra practice, breath practice and body scans alike. Nothing about meditation of any kind is a substitute for medical care if you are struggling, and the National Institute of Mental Health has plain guidance on when to speak to someone.

How does TM compare with guided meditation?

A guided meditation is a session led by a voice, usually with the breath or the body as the anchor instead of a mantra, with no course and no fee before you start. The voice does the reminding that TM leaves to you, which is why beginners usually find guided sessions easier in the first weeks. Sessions can be three minutes or thirty, once a day or when you need one. The honest comparison, point by point, is in transcendental meditation vs guided meditation; the short version is that TM offers a teacher, a tradition and a fixed routine, and guided meditation offers something you can do tonight.

If a mantra appeals and the course does not, mantra meditation outside TM is centuries older than TM and needs no course: you choose a word or a short phrase and return to it the same way. How to meditate properly explains what matters in any sitting practice and what does not, and the anchor you choose is in the second list.

A free way to start today

Open the meditation page and pick a three-minute guided session. In CalmSpace.ai the guided meditations are recorded in the voice of Bliss, the voice companion, and she can make a custom one for the day you have had. The basics of the library are free, there is no course first, and you can talk to Bliss by voice for up to ten minutes a day without paying. Premium is USD 12.99 a month or USD 59.99 a year with a 14-day free trial, and it is not required to meditate. Do a short session most days for a month. If at the end of it you want more structure, a teacher and a single technique, the TM course will still be there and you will know you can keep a practice; if you find the voice and the breath are enough, you have saved the fee.

CalmSpace.ai does not teach TM, does not assign a mantra, and Bliss is not a certified teacher of anything. It is a calm app, not a medical service.

Questions people ask

How much does transcendental meditation cost?

A one-off course fee set by country; in the United States it is on a published sliding scale by income, from a few hundred dollars to around a thousand at the time of writing. Check the official TM site for where you live.

Can I learn transcendental meditation for free or from an app?

Not as taught. TM is learned in person from a certified teacher and the mantra is given in the course. Apps, including CalmSpace.ai, offer guided meditation and mantra-free practice instead, which need no course.

How long do you do transcendental meditation each day?

About twenty minutes, twice a day, as taught. Guided meditation has no fixed dose; three to ten minutes most days is a common start.

Is transcendental meditation better than other meditation?

Its organisation makes claims for it; we make none either way. The practices differ in anchor, teacher and routine, and the one that is better for you is the one you will do most days.
